The Twelve Days of Christmas

This whole advent idea + the Christmas themed Bonds commercials on tv atm have got me thinking about thematic ornaments/projects for Christmastime based on the Twelve Days of Christmas. The GOOD thing about is, however, that they don’t start ‘TILL Christmas, so as the Advent Calendar ends, then this project (probably) begins. WOO!

As inspiration I’ve been clicking about looking for prompts from the song – both the Traditional version and my own ‘Aussie’ based prompts. I know, I know, there’s already an Aussie version that’s filled with emus in gum trees, kookaburras, kangaroos and wombats, OH MY! We used to sing it every year in my Primary School Christmas Concert. But I don’t know about you, but I don’t spend any Christmases with many possums, koalas or any other marsupials. Well, we may EAT the occasional kangaroo…

In the traditional version, the first day of Christmas features a partridge and a pear tree. Funnily enough, I can’t find any crochet OR knitting patterns with a realistic looking partridge in them. Mostly as partridges tend to look like a pheasant and a quail had a quaint little baby:

A partridge

And though festive season artists in history seem to have gotten it very VERY right (how good is that!?) – for SOME reason yarn pattern writers seem to want to interpret that as a dove…

NOT SO CORRECT THAR, designers… Alas! Partridge isn’t the same as Dove, guys, also isn’t that completely the wrong Biblical tale?

Pears on the other hand, there’s SO MANY pretty pears. MmmmMmmMmMmmm! Crunchy delicious. And in this case, CHUBBY YARN DELICIOUS! Two of the faves I found?

Pear Knitting Pattern Tutorial

LOOK AT THIS DELICIOUS Knitted pear!? Oh just look directly at it. Its chubby little stitches make me SO very happy.  The best part? Linda at Natural Suburbia released a free pattern for it! MMmMmmmmm tasty tasty…

My other fave? WITNESS THE ENORMO SQUISHY CUDDLE-ABLE AMIGURUMI PEARS OF HUAGNESS from Salihan Crafts:

It’s also available in a knitted version, Perry the Pear.

MmMMmmmmm… Perry… Uh, where was I? ^_^;;; OH YEAH! So my BRIGHT AND CLEARLY AMAZING idea for the Aussie version was going to be “A grilled prawn on the barbie” but I can’t actually find any cool knit or crocheted prawns either. MASSIVE OVERSIGHT, YARNING COMMUNITY! xD
